A product of the youth set-up at Sevilla, where he went on to make his top-flight debut at just 17, Sergio Ramos's performances exude determination and commitment. Versatile enough to have played as a centre-back as well as a holding midfielder, Ramos appears to have finally settled in the right full-back role with Spain and club side Real Madrid.
The position makes the most of his battling qualities, while also giving greater rein to his pace going forward and crossing ability. Nor is he averse to hurtling towards the area and trying a shot at goal, though his real attacking threat comes from set pieces, where his aerial prowess can come to the fore.
His impressive natural reserves of stamina and powerful physique, allied to his consistency and relative lack of injuries, all mean that Ramos is rarely out of the starting eleven for La Roja or Los Blancos.
A member of the Spain side crowned European U-19 champions in 2004, this self-confessed fan of bull-fighting and flamenco made his full international debut in March 2005. One year on he had done enough to be included in the squad for Germany 2006, and was La Roja's first-choice at right-back during the UEFA EURO 2008 success.
